Cannot delete files from server

I have installed Joomla on one of my sites and created a folder within /htdocs called cms and installed it in there i.e. /htdocs/cms/joomla etc...

I am having 2 problems:

1. I cannot delete any folders from my ftp server. I am trying to delete the Joomla installation folder but nothing happens when i do

2. When i connect to the site with Core FTP it connects to the /htdocs folder at start but i want it to connect to the root folder. How do i do this? I have never had this problem before.

I have been at this for the past few hours and am baffled.

Right click on remote directory -> Directory Commands -> List mode -> Advanced.
