I found the cause of the problem. It happens when 'Ignore' is checked in 'Global Settings - Extensions - Files that should be transferred as ASCII'.

That couldn't have been the cause. After your first suggestions, I deliberately placed a file with the same name as the one I was trying to download in the destination directory, and I got the dialog asking whether to overwrite the file. No, there were no problems in those areas. I'd tried several files from several servers. The disk has 2GB free. I've now solved the problem by uninstalling and re-installing the program. Can upload but not download

I've been using Core FTP LE for several weeks to upload files. Today I tried to use it for downloads, and it failed. I tried several sites, with the same result. The transfer pane just says 'Failed' under 'Status'.
